BARRICK Niugini, the 95% owner of the in the Porgera gold mine joint venture in Enga Province, has donated K6.5 million to relief efforts following the February 26 earthquake and its devastating aftershocks.

O’Neill said that Barrick’s Hides gas power plant in Hela Province had to close for three weeks as a result of the catastrophe.
Barrick Niugini executive managing director Richmond Fenn said there was limited production from the mine because of the loss of power.
“The loss affected us and we will not have Hides operating for several months, and probably full operations for another several months,” Fenn said.
